Republic Day (Ghana) 2026 — How Many Days Until Republic Day (Ghana)?
About Republic Day (Ghana)
Republic Day in Ghana is observed on 1 July each year, commemorating the date in 1960 when Ghana became a republic. Although Ghana had already gained independence from Britain in 1957, it remained a constitutional monarchy with the British monarch as head of state until 1 July 1960, when a new republican constitution came into force and Kwame Nkrumah became the country's first President.
The transition to a republic represented a deeper assertion of Ghanaian sovereignty and self-governance. Republic Day is marked with flag-raising ceremonies, civic events, and cultural programmes in cities and towns across the country. The milestone is also an opportunity to reflect on Ghana's journey as one of Africa's earliest and most significant democracies.
Republic Day is sometimes less publicly prominent than Independence Day (6 March), but it holds important constitutional significance in Ghana's national history.
